Speak & Spell

Speak & Spell introduced Depeche Mode to a wider audience and firmly placed the band within the emerging British synth-pop movement of the early 1980s.

The album was largely driven by catchy hooks, simple electronic arrangements and lyrics focused on youth, romance and everyday emotions rather than darker or political themes.

While stylistically different from the band’s later work, Speak & Spell remains an important snapshot of Depeche Mode’s origins and the foundation of their future evolution.
