Speak & Spell

1981

The debut studio album by Depeche Mode, built around bright synth-pop melodies, youthful energy and an unmistakably playful electronic sound.

Background

Speak & Spell introduced Depeche Mode to a wider audience and firmly placed the band within the emerging British synth-pop movement of the early 1980s.

The album was largely driven by catchy hooks, simple electronic arrangements and lyrics focused on youth, romance and everyday emotions rather than darker or political themes.
